U.S. Senator. Moving with his parents to Kentucky, in 1786, he attended Transylvania Seminary, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Richmond, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, (1805-06, 12, 18-20) and Kentucky Secretary of State, (1812-16). During the War of 1812, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army. After the war, he was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William T. Barry, serving (1816-17).
