US Congressman. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of US Senator Henry Clay. He was clerk at a count house in Boston, (1832-34) studied law at the Lexington Law School Kentucky, was admitted to the bar, practiced law in Lexington and was the Chargé d’Affaires to Portugal, (1849-50). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the 1861, peace convention held in Washington, D.C., to prevent the impending the Civil War. He died at age 46 in Montreal, Canada.
