He graduated from the Chicago Manual Training School in 1902, from the University of Virginia in 1906, studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1907 and commenced to practice law in Chicago, Illinois, During World war I, he served as a Major in the 342nd Infantry, 86th Division, U.S. Army (1917-19). After the war, he resumed the practice of law, engaged in banking in 1921 and was Chicago Park Commissioner (1929-31, 1937-38). He also was a member of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Service Commission of Illinois and treasurer of the Cook County Republican Central Committee (1938-42). In 1941, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-seventh Congress, serving until 1943. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged investment banking until his death.
