World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve. On April 30, 1917, Lieutenant Commander was in command of the HMS Prize when she was attacked by the German submarine U-93 in the Atlantic Ocean, south of Ireland. Badly damaged by shellfire with the ship appearing to be sinking, the U-boat approached to within 80 yards of her port quarter, when Lieutenant Commander Sanders ordered opened fire. Within minutes the submarine was on fire, her bow rose in the air and was believed to have been sunk. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. On the night of August 13, 1917, the HMS Prize was on patrol duty escorting the British submarine, D-8, when it torpedoed and sunk with no survivors.
