This monument marks the general area near the Shultz House where the 60 men of Company D, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry were rushed from their posts as divisional provost gaurds into the collapsing Union lines north of the town of Gettysburg late in the fighting of the First Day of the Battle (July 1, 1863). Led by Captain James Glenn, the only unwounded officer of the regiment, Company D stalled advancing Confederates of General Abner Perrin’s brigade for 20 minutes, which gave a bit more time for Union troops to flee the area and stream to the safety of Cemetery Hill south of the town. The Company lost two men killed, Sergeant Alexander M. Stewart and Private James Baldwin, during their stand. After the war Private Baldwin’s family help erect the monument marking the site where his Company fought, and it was dedicated on October 20, 1886.
