Roman Catholic Pope and Saint. Sixtus II became the 24th Pope in the year 257 when he was elected Pope on August 31, 257. His reign ended when he was martyred in Rome on August 6, 258, the date being confirmed by a letter from St. Cyprian who a short time later was also martyred. He was killed when he was beheaded as he said mass in one of the catacombs under the city of Rome.
