Roman Catholic Pope. The tenth successor to St. Peter, he became pope after Pope Saint Pius was martyred. Given the lack of accurate historical records, it is commonly accepted that he ruled between ten and eleven years. He discussed with St. Polycarp the possibility of establishing a firm date for the celebration of Easter without resolution. He allowed the church in Smyrna to continue to celebrate it on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nisan, the same day as Passover. He also condemned Marcionism known later as Montanism. He died in 168, although the Catholic Church canonized him as a martyr there is no historical verification.
