Scientist, Inventor. Having graduated from the University of Ghent in Belgium in 1882 and having received his doctorate from there in 1884, he immigrated to the United States in 1889. He invented Velox, a photographic paper, and received a fortune when he sold his Nepera Chemical Company to Eastman Kodak in 1899. Experimenting with synthetic resins, he introduced Bakelite in 1907 and formed the Bakelite Company the next year, serving as president of the company until 1939.
