British Navy Admiral. He was born in Newcastle and was educated at the Royal Free Grammar School in Jesmond. He joined the Royal Navy straight after leaving school and gradually rose through the ranks. When Nelson was killed Lord Collingwood took charge of the battle. The British went on to defeat Napoleon and he was awarded a peerage and an annual pension of £2,000. He later became Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean before dying at sea off Minorca in 1810.
