British Naval Officer. Born in Scotland, he entered service in 1777. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1779, he was present in Lord Rodney's action off Martinique, the siege of St. Kitts, and the capture of the French Commander De Grasse, in 1782. He rose to become Commander in 1790 and then Captain in 1793. He commanded the “HMS Mars” during the blockade of Rochefort and Brest in 1804-5 and in the Battle of Trafalgar, where he lost his life, 1805. He was killed early in the battle by a round shot which took off his head. He fell in the “Mars'” gangway, where it lay until the end of the battle draped in the Union Flag. The inscription on his monument reads "Erected at the Public Expense to the memory of Captain George Duff who was killed the XXIst of Octr MDCCCV. commanding the Mars in the battle of Trafalgar in the forty-second year of his age and the twenty-ninth of his service
