Private Duffy and two others approached the gun and fastened a rope to it in such a manner that it could be pulled away. It thus was saved from falling into the hands of the enemy. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on October 16, 1857. He died in Dublin, Ireland, in 1868 at age 63.
