Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Mount Temple, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 1st Madras Fusiliers, British Army. On September 26, 1857, at Lucknow, India, a 24-pounder gun that had been used against the enemy on the previous day was left in an exposed position. All efforts to reach it were unsuccessful, due to heavy fire maintained on it by the mutineers.
Private Duffy and two others approached the gun and fastened a rope to it in such a manner that it could be pulled away. It thus was saved from falling into the hands of the enemy. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on October 16, 1857. He died in Dublin, Ireland, in 1868 at age 63.
