William Arthur Harper was the son of Jesse and Eliza Handley of 28 College Street, Northfleet and the brother of Alfred, Florence, Jesse, Edith, Alice and Charles.

He was born in Northfleet, Kent on November 3rd 1892 and baptised at St Botolph's Church, Northfleet, on 6th August 1893.

He married Jessie Emily Ross at St Mathias Church, Poplar. on April 28th 1916.

During World War I he served as a driver with the Royal Army Service Corps in Belgium, France and Flanders from 1916 until 1919 and was awarded the Victory Medal. After serving as a Lance-Corporal and Quatermaster he reached the rank of Warrent Officer, Second Class and his service number was 112382.

Three weeks after being de-mobbed at Woolwich Arsenal he emmigrated aboard SS Euripides II to Glen Innes, New South Wales, where his sons, William Harper(1921) and Robert Allan(1925)were born. His first daughter, Beryl Jessie, was born at Tamworth, New South Wales in 1926 and died there two years later. His last two children, Edith Florence Handley(1928) and John Richard Handley(1933) were born at Glen Innes.

He worked as a Drapery store Manager and joined the Freemasons in 1921, later becoming Master of the Tenterfield Lodge. He was also secretary and treasurer of the Peak Hill branch of the Returned Servicemen's League and was awarded life membership.

After Jessie Died in 1962 he moved to Gunnedah to live with his daughter, Edith, where he became secretary and treasurer of the Bowling Club for which he was given life membership.

He died of old age at Gunnedah, Australia, Jan 16 1981 and was cremated at Northern Suburbs Crematorium Sydney Australia (Wall OA).
