Born in the townland of Aghacurreen, near the town of Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon, Ireland. Son of Martin Kelly and Jennie Dillon. Twin brother of Anne Kelly-Doherty. Most documents point to him being born around May 1840. He was baptized in April 1833 in the Tibohine Parish. He immigrated to Essex County, NJ in 1857 and his brother, Dominick, was his sponsor for his Declaration of Intent to naturalize. In 1865, he was Naturalized in Hudson County, NJ. He married Mary Sharkey 19 Nov 1872 at Old St. Patrick's Church in Chicago. They had 5 children and then she died in 1881. He then married Bridget Egan 20 Nov 1883. They had no children together. It was said that his children did not care for Bridget Egan and that she was not nice to them. Mary Sharkey was his soulmate. So much so that he had her body exhumed from Calvary Cemetery and reburied at Mt. Carmel Cemetery so that they could be buried together. He left Bridget Egan buried at Calvary Cemetery. One of his children, Martin Joseph Kelly (b. 1875), is not listed on findagrave because his death/burial information was not found. It is very possible that Martin was in prison and when released, he was a barber for the U.S. Army and moved around the country. Martin died between 1818-1849.
