Mary was baptized in the Tibohine parish on 27 Aug 1845. She was born in the townland of Ballinphuill near the larger town of Ballaghadereen, in County Roscommon, Ireland. Her parents were Bartley Sharkey and Elizabeth (Bessie) Doyle. She was the eldest of 7 known children, but there were probably more born between 1859-1864 where no civil/church records exist. The only sibling that was found to marry/have children was her brother, Martin, who immigrated to Chicago as well and he married Katherine Wall and had 5 children before his death. From what little information that was found on the Sharkey's from Ballinphuill, it is discerned that they fell on very hard economic times. Some cousins moved to England, some were found in poorhouses and some went to the U.S. It is very possible that Mary and Martin's other siblings immigrated to different areas/countries and their marriage information has not been found yet. She married Luke Kelly of Aghacurreen in 1872 in Chicago. They had 5 children, with the youngest born in 1880. She died in Aug 1881 and her death record states she died of Typho-malarial Fever. She was buried and Calvary Cemetery and exhumed in 1903 along with her niece Bessie Sharkey and brother-in-law Patrick Kelly and all 3 were reburied at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.
