Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in London, England, he served as a Captain in the 56th Bengal Native Infantry, Indian Army. On April 15, 1858, during the attack on Fort Ruhya, India, Captain Cafe with other volunteers in a most exposed position under very heavy fire, carried away the body of an officer of the 14th Punjab Rifles from the top of the glacis of the structure. He then went again on his own to the rescue of one of his Privates who had been severely wounded. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on February 17, 1860. Remaining in the Army, he later achived the rank of General. He died at age 80 in London, England.
