CHICKAMAUGA - James Duke "J.D." Jones, 81, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004.

He was born in Walker County to the late Rufus Scott and Hattie Lou Johnson Jones.

He proudly served his country in World War II in the U.S. Marine Corps 4th Division from Jan. 19, 1943, until Nov. 24, 1945, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945. He had also received the Marksmanship Medal, Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and the American Campaign Medal. He was the former owner/operator of Dixie Automotive Sales and a former employee of Tennessee Products. He was a deacon and member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Chickamauga where he was a member of the Good News Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Hearts Association and the Chickamauga post of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Maurice, Bernard, Dan and Willis Jones Sr.; sisters, Daphne Jones, Virginia Tudor; granddaughters, Tonya Deirea Jones and Shana Ann Moore.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mattie Geurin Jones of Chickamauga; sons and daughters-in-law, James R. "Ronnie" and Linda Jones of Harrison, Donald D. "Donnie" and Nancy Jones of Bristol, Tenn.; daughters and son-in-law, Janice E. Brodie of Wallaceville, Ga., Lisa J. and Darrell Bloodworth of Fort Oglethorpe; brother, Paul Jones; sister, Bernice Hinch, both of Chickamauga; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with the Rev. Jim Reynolds officiating.

Burial will follow in Chickamauga Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. today and Saturday morning prior to the service.
