Second Boer War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Hutton Park, Melton Mowbray, Tasmania, Australia, he served as a Trooper in the 2nd Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen Contingent. On September 1, 1900, Trooper Bisdee was with a scouting party near Warmbad, Transvaal, South Africa, when ambushed by Boers in a rocky defile. Six of the eight men were wounded, including his officer, whose horse broke away and bolted. Trooper Bisdee dismounted, put the wounded officer on his own horse and ran alongside, then mounted behind him and withdrew under heavy fire. For prestigious for gallantry, he was the first Australian awarded the Victoria Cross on November 13, 1900 and later achieved the rank of Lieutenant. During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel provost marshal in the Anzac Provost Corps, Egypt and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. After the war, he was a farmer at Tranquility, Melton Mowbray, until his death from chronic nephritis at age 60.
