Amy Cox, daughter of General James Cox and Ann Potts, was the fifth of thirteen siblings, and a twin to her sister Mary. Her father died in 1810; her mother drowned in 1815 during the capsizing of the Traveller en route to Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Amy married John Vanderveer on 12 Jan 1819 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. She died the following year at age 36 and was interred in First Baptist Church Cemetery in Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey.
