Army Spc. Barnes was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed as a result of a grenade being thrown from a window of a Baghdad civilian hospital that he was guarding. One of his sister's favorite memories of Jonathan was when he was a baby. He had pulled all the pots and pans from the kitchen cupboards and shut himself inside to hide. The family has a photo of him smiling and sitting among all the dishes. He attended school in Coweta, Oklahoma, but was home-schooled after his sixth-grade year. He had a black belt in tae kwon do. Jonathan wanted what was best for his family, and figured the military was the best way to accomplish that. He served in Korea and Kuwait before being sent to Iraq. Jonathan took law enforcement classes in the service and hoped to eventually become a state trooper. He is survived by his wife, Amanda, and 2-year-old daughter.
