Gertrude was the daughter of Anna Grenier and Edgar Samson. She was born into a large family in Quebec. She complained that in her early years speaking only French closed opportunities for her. She packed up, moved to Ontario and learned English. When she got married and had children, her aim was to have us speak English and not French. She thought this would be better for us. She didn't realize at the time that it would have been better to speak both languages.
