U.S. Congressman. He was head of the Rufus Palen Leather Company, a partner in Knapp & Palen, Palen & Flagler companies and a partner in a the Palen Foster General Store. In addition he held several political offices such as Postmaster of Palenville, New York, a Palenville town board member, school supervisor and district highway overseer for Fallsburg, New York. In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1844. After leaving Congress, he traveled outside the United States in an effort to improve his health until his death from tuberculosis.
