Motion Picture Director. He is remembered as a Belgium-born film director, who worked mainly in France, but also in the United States, England, and Germany. Starting in the silent film era, his films include "L'Atlantide" in 1921, "Carmen" in 1926, "Thérèse Raquin" in 1928, "The Kiss" (with Greta Garbo) in 1930, "Anna Christie" (again with Garbo) in 1932, "La Kermesse Heroïque" in 1935, "Knight Without Armour" (with Marlene Dietrich and Robert Donat) in 1937, "Une Femme Disparait" in 1941 and "Macadam" in 1946. He came to France in 1912 as an actor and directed his first film the next year. He became a naturalized French citizen in 1928. The 1928 French film, "Les Nouveaux Messieurs" or in English, "The New Gentlemen," was banned in France for its satiric treatment of the government. He married French actress Françoise Rosay, who starred in several of his films.
