John Nelson Bowers was the youngest son (14th child) of Abraham James Bowers Sr. and Christena Sinclair Bowers of Nephi, Utah. During World War II he was commissioned in the U.S. Army and served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater with the 635 Tank Destroyer Branch as a cannoneer. He was honorably discharged for physical disability and suffered from what was then known as "shell-shock."

Later in life he married Marie Arehart who had been twice previously married to George Bland and Earl Pauth.
