US Congressman. He engaged in the building and management of railways in Virginia, North Carolina, was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates (1821-31) and served in the Virginia State Senate, (1831-36, 1848-51). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. He declined to be a candidate for re-nomination, returned to his former business interest and was Mayor of Petersburg, Virginia, (1847-48).
