US Congressman and Diplomat. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Virginia's 2nd district from August 1847 until March 1858. Born near Lawrenceville, Virginia, he studied law and after being admitted to the Virginia bar, he practiced law in Petersburg, Virginia. In 1835 he entered politics when he was elected to the Virginia Senate, representing Brunswick, Dinwiddie, and Greensville Counties, serving until 1838. In August 1846 he was elected to Congress, filling the seat vacated by the death of George Dromgoole, and was re-elected to two additional terms. In December 1857 he was appointed by US President James Buchanan as US Minister to Brazil and his congressional seat was taken in March 1858 by John Singleton Millson. In July 1861 he returned to Virginia to support the Confederate cause in the American Civil War and was replaced by James Watson Webb. He died in Petersburg, Virginia at the age of 58.
