Major League Baseball Player. A former major league shortstop who helped the Detroit Tigers win the 1935 World Series, he played 15 seasons with the Tigers, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, retiring in 1940. He was a city councilman for nearly 40 years, with the exception of a two-year break in the late 1940s. On September 27, 1999 he threw the ceremonial first pitch at the final game at Tiger Stadium.
