Clarence W. Davidson, former editor of the Otsego Republican and one of the most prominent residents of this village, died suddenly at 4 a. m. Monday, at his home in Elm Street, a victim of heart disease. Born at Middlefield Center, November 7, 1867, he was the oldest child and only son of the late Hon. Andrew Davidson and Altana Barnum Davidson. His father was a Civil War veteran, editor and prominent Mason; also in charge of the Soldiers' Home at Bath for a period. Clarence Davidson was graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1883 and then became associated with his father in the management of the Otsego Republican. At his father's death he continued the editorship until the Republican was merged with the Otsego Farmer about 16 years ago. He had been chief of t h e Cooperstown. Fire Department and he was foreman for many years of t h e Phinney Hose Company, during which period the company was one of the finest drilled in the county. Mr. Davidson was a member of the Knights of Maccabees and record keeper. He was a member of James F. Clark Camp, Sons of Veterans, Otsego Lodge, 138, F. & A. M.; Otsego Chapter 26, R. A. M., and Otsego Commandery. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and had been superintendent of the Sunday school. August 29, 1888, he was married to Miss Gertrude A. Bunn, who survives, with nine children: Miss Clara G. Davidson of Cleveland, Dr. Donald Davidson of Hancock, Delaware Co., Bowne of Syracuse, Mrs. Charles A Clark and the youngest, Jean, in Cooperstown, Mrs. Frank Nelms of Philadelphia and Andrew C. of Albany, and Walter, a midshipman at the Naval Academy at Annapolis; also two sisters, Mrs. William Beattie of New York and Mrs. N. P. Willis of Cooperstown and Albany.
