US Congressman. Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, he moved to North Carolina with his parents ands settled in Smithfield, in 1867. He graduated from University of North, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1885 and proceeded to practice in Smithfield, North Carolina. He was chairman of the Democratic executive committee of Johnston County in 1886 and solicitor of the fourth judicial district of North Carolina, (1890-1901). In 1901, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh Congress and to the next sixteen succeeding Congresses and served until his death. He died at age 70 in Washington, D.C.
