U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1821, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Morganton, North Carolina, in 1830. He was the clerk of the Superior Court of Ashe County (1831-35). In 1842, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lewis Williams, serving until 1843. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons (1852-54) and served in the North Carolina State Senate in 1860. He was appointed a judge of the North Carolina Superior Court by Provisional Governor Holden, in September 1865 and served until he resigned in 1875.
