Composer, Teacher. Born in Marseilles, France, he attended the Paris Conservatory and won its top award, the Prix de Rome, in 1840. After four years of obligatory study in Italy he returned to the Conservatory as a singing instructor, becoming professor of harmony in 1848. His students included Georges Bizet and Charles Lecocq, and he wrote an influential treatise, "A Theoretical and Practical Course in Harmony" (1858). Outside of academia Bazin was well regarded for his operettas. They are rarely performed today, though the aria "Je pense a vous" from "Maitre Pathelin" (1856), probably his finest work, is still a standard recital piece. Among his other light operas are "The Trumpet of Mr. Prince" (1846), "Madelon" (1852), "Marianne" (1861), and "A Voyage to China" (1865). Bazin was elected to the Academie des Beaux-Arts in 1873.
