Bettie Blaydes was the daughter of Banyan Payne (1800-1878) and his second wife, Malinda Ann Thompson (1804-1841). Following her mother's death in 1841, she and her older brother, John Liewellyn Payne were reared by their father and new step-mother, Nancy M. Wright Payne, niece of their mother. Bettie's brother John and Dr. James Elliott Blaydes attended medical school together in Nashville, Tennessee. When the Civil War ended, Dr. Blaydes set up his practice in Portersville (now Atoka), not far from the Banyan Payne home place. Bettie and Dr. Blaydes were married on May 3, 1866. They had six children, three of whom lived to adulthood. When her father died in 1878, Bettie inherited property which enabled the Blaydes' to live comfortably and manage their financial affairs well.
