Eldest son of Banyan (1800-1878) and Nancy M. Wright (1822-1883) PAYNE, Daniel became a farmer. During the Civil War he fought in Company G of the 51st Tennessee Infantry and served with distinction. He married Cora Ann Dickson (1849-1937) on November 12, 1867. She was the daughter of Dr. Christopher William and Henrietta S. Barrett DICKSON, long time residents of the community of Salem in Tipton County. The couple had nine children.
