Jackson Morton

US Senator. He graduated from Washington College in 1814, from William and Mary College, Williamsburg in 1815, moved to Pensacola, Florida, in 1820 and engaged in the lumber business. He was a member, Florida Legislative Council (1836-37), a delegate to the constitutional convention of Florida in 1838, US Navy agent at Pensacola, (1841-45) and the presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1848. In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed his activities in the lumber business, was a deputy to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States in 1861 and a member of the Confederate Congress (1862-65), during the Civil War. After his term, he again engaged in the lumber business until his death at age 80. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
