He was born as James Aubrey Whiteside in Liverpool, England, (some sources say, Bolton, Lancashire, England), to the American-born gymnast Robert Aubrey (His parents are also listed as John Whitehead and Sarah Ann Walker Whitehead), on September 23, 1887. He was baptized at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Bolton, Lancashire, England, on November 9, 1887. He was educated in his native England and first traveled to New York, New York, in 1900, at the age of thirteen. He started his acting career in theatre with Fred Karno's theatrical company troupe when it came to the United States in 1908. He then continued his acting career in vaudeville before making the transition to film after moving permanently to Los Angeles, California, from London, England, that same year. He made his actual film debut playing the role of 'Heinie' in the comedy film, "A Mix-Up" (1915). The film also starred also Walter Kendig and Dallas Welford. The film which was directed by Curtis Bernhardt, which was written for the screen by S.N. Behrman and Hans Rameau, which was based on the play, "Waterloo Bridge," written by Robert E. Sherwood, and which also starred Leslie Caron, John Kerr, and Cedric Hardwicke, tells the story of Gaby who is a ballet dancer in 1944 London, England, who happens to bump into a corporal Greg while rushing to catch the bus. Greg is mesmerized by Gaby and goes to the ballet to see her on stage, but Gaby is French and wants nothing to do with Greg. But he persists and by the end of the day, she agrees to marry. But before they can marry, there is a mountain of red tape, and Greg ships out while promising to marry Gaby on his return. When she hears that he has been killed, she makes herself available to anyone who would want her. He retired from acting shortly thereafter. During his acting career, he also used the name Jack Anderson, James A. Aubrey, James Aubrey, Jimmie Aubrey, Jim Aubrey, A. Whitehead, and James Whitehead. He passed away in Woodland Hills, California, on September 2, 1983, at the age of 95, and he was buried in San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, California. He was married to Phyllis Byrne Aubrey but the couple later divorced. The couple had no children together.
