D.C. police officer
Frank Buentello, 66, who retired from the Metropolitan Police Department in 2010 with the rank of master police officer and who drew attention for being the highest-paid member of the department because of his overtime pay, died Oct. 9 at Washington Hospital Center of cardiac arrest.
The death was confirmed by a family friend, Birchie Whitman.
Officer Buentello, a District resident, spent 41 years as a policeman in Washington. Over the years, he participated in sting operations to apprehend counterfeit identification and merchandise distributors.
Throughout the past decade, he was a subject of news reports about his overtime pay. The Washington Post reported that in 2000 he made $200,030 of which $142,355 was overtime pay. According to the Washington Times, Officer Buentello made $261,305.86 in 2005, more than tripling his annual salary of $73,610.
Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey defended the overtime pay, saying it was necessary because of severe staffing shortages.
Frank Buentello was born in Detroit and served in the Army Rangers in Vietnam. He settled in the Washington area in 1969.
His memberships included Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church in the District.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, the former Ruby Aziza Eskander Gouda, of Washington.
