Monegasque Prince. Florestano I Grimaldi's first-born son, he did not fully share his father's lax politics and economy, and is considered the real promoter of the tourist development of the Principality. Before ascending the throne he made an attempt to depose the parent (1853) but with the only result of being discovered and imprisoned for conspiracy. Ascended the throne in 1856 after the death of his father, he began a series of organizational and aesthetic modernizations of the territory, aimed at increasing the influx of wealthy foreigners. He is also remembered for having been the creator and founder of the Monte Carlo Casino, and for having obtained the complete independence of Monaco from France (1861). Charles III of Monaco was also the first ruler to establish diplomatic and commercial collaboration contacts with all of Europe.
