Hubert was the son of William M. Howell and Eva Knight.
Because of his previous career choice as a moonshiner, he was featured in the book "Mountain Spirits," and was also interviewed by Charles Kuralt for his "On the Road" series.

Hubert Howell, 88, of Route 6, Canton Highway, died Friday, December 12, 1986, in a local hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 19, 1898 in Bartow County, son of the late Martin Howell and Eva Knight Howell; was a member of the Center Baptist Church and retired bus driver.

Preceded in death by a sister, Armeretta Shinall and a brother, Howard C. Howell; survivors include three sisters, Gertrude Shinall, Emergene Brooks and Myrtle Abernathy, all of Cartersville; three brothers, Harold Howell, Hoyt Howell and Herman Howell, all of Cartersville.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Center Baptist Church with the Rev. Sammy Adams officiating. Interment followed in the Old Macedonia Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Joe Howell, Mike Howell, David Howell, Charles Howell, Donald Howell and Douglas Abernathy.
