Religious Leader. Peruvian religious leader and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of Lima, he joined the Society of Jesus, at the Novitiate of St. Stanislas Kotska, in Miraflores, on March 9, 1940, Later, he studied at the Jesuit Philosophical Faculty, in San Miguel (Argentina) and in Madrid (Spain) and also at the Jesuit Theological Faculty, in Granada (Spain) and at the University of San Marcos, in Lima where he received a doctorate in education. He was ordained, on July 15, 1955, in Madrid. From 1969 to 1975, he served as spiritual director and rector of "La Inmaculada" Jesuit school, in Lima. He was also provincial delegate for Jesuit educational works in Perú; provincial counselor and master of novices; director of Marian sodality; pastoral work among students and founder of Hogar de Cristo and of schools Fe y Alegría.On August 15, 1978, he was consecrated bishop of Cissi and appointed apostolic vicar of Jaén en Perú or San Francisco Javier. He was elected secretary general of the Episcopal Conference of Perú, in 1982 and was reelected two more times. He resigned the pastoral government of his vicariate, on August 23, 1985. On December 30, 1989, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Lima. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal, on November 26, 1994. He resigned the pastoral government of his archdiocese, on January 9, 1999, but continued ministering at a homeless shelter he founded in Lima. He passed away in his beloved episcopal city.
