Maryland Governor. Educated at Reverend John Bowie's School, he served as Captain in the 9th Regiment, Maryland Militia, during the War of 1812. Prior to the War of 1812, he was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, (1807 to 1812) and again (1813, 1817, 1819 to 1820). In 1822, he was elected as a Democrat the 18th Governor of Maryland, serving until 1826. During his two terms, legislation was passed that granted Jews the right to vote, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company was chartered and construction on the national road was finished. After leaving office, he served as president of the Agricultural Society for the Eastern Shore and managed his estate until his death.
