U.S. Congressman. Moving to Mississippi, he attended the Cooper Institute, graduated from the law department of Cumberland University Tennessee, in 1884, was admitted to the bar in 1885 and commenced to practice law in Philadelphia, Mississippi. He was superintendent of education for Neshoba County, (1887-89), a member of the Mississippi State Senate (1889-96) and served in the Mississippi State House of Representatives, (1896-97). He also was prosecuting attorney for the tenth judicial district in 1897 and judge of the sixth chancery district, (1897-1903). In 1903, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-eighth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1911. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 52.
