US Congressman, US Senator. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa State Militia during the Civil War, and assisted Governor Samuel J. Kirkland in raising regiments for the Union Army. He was elected as a Republican to represent Iowa's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1863 to 1871. He was later elected as a Republican Senator from Iowa to the United States Senate, serving in that office from 1873 until his death in 1908.
