Elmer Floyd Criger was born November 12, 1887, in Elkhart, Indiana. He was the last child born to Charles Criger (1836 – 1921) and his wife Lovina Stutsman Criger (1844 – 1928). He had seven brothers and sisters: Henry David, Mary Elizabeth (married Jacob Elias Schrader), George Franklin, Andrew Jackson, Louis (known as Lou Criger during his professional baseball career), Noah Arlington and Rhoda Ann (married Michael Holdeman). He grew up in Elkhart and followed his older brother Lou into baseball. He played for the Southern Michigan League on a team called the Jackson Convicts during 1908 and 1909 as a pitcher. He is shown in a 1908 picture with his brother Lou Criger in a team picture of the Boston Red Sox, but no record is found of his career while part of this team, so it is supposed he was not picked up as a player for this team. Elmer next played professional baseball in 1910 and 1911 for the Los Angeles Angels, in the Pacific Coast League as a pitcher. He played during 1912 and 1913 for the Northwestern League; for the Tacoma Tigers and Vancouver Beavers. After he left baseball, he moved to Oakland and was a teamster. He married Amy R. Stephenson in 1915 in Oakland, California. Elmer and his wife Amy had 2 daughters but no grandchildren, as Elmira Frances Criger never married and May Criger Kuehn had no children from her marriage.
On a 1920 census record, Elmer is listed as working as a box maker in a box factory in Oakland, Alameda County, California. On a 1930 census record, Elmer is listed as a laborer in the draying industry in San Francisco.
