US Congressman. Elected to represent Minnesota's 4th District in the United States House of Reprsentatives, serving from 1887 until his death in 1889. Also served as a Member of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature in 1851, Member of the Minnesota State Senate representing the 1st and 23rd Districts from 1864 to 1865, and 1873 to 1874, Member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives in 1867, Candidate for Governor of Minnesota in 1879, and Mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1881.
