U.S. Congressman. Moving to Mississippi, in 1870, he attended Male Academy, graduated from the law department of the University of Mississippi, in 1881, was admitted to the bar and began to practice law in Iuka, Mississippi. He was a member of the Democratic executive committee for several years and was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving (1901-21). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was Mayor of Corinth, Mississippi, (1933-37).
