U.S. Senator. Moving to Mississippi as a child, he later joined the Mississippi Rifles in 1846 and served in Mexico-American War. After the war he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Carrollton, Mississippi. He was a reporter of the Mississippi Supreme Court, in 1854 and during the Civil War he was commissioned a Brigadier General of the Mississippi State troops, in the Confederate Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was appointed Chief Justice of the Mississippi State Supreme Court, serving (1879-80). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until his death at age 70.
