U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States in 1889, he settled in Jordan, Minnesota and engaged in agricultural pursuits in 1903. He was member of the board of aldermen of Jordan, (1905-13), served on the board of education (1913-19) and was one of the organizers of Land O’ Lakes Creamery in 1920. In addition, he was vice president of the Jordan board of directors, (1927-33), a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, (1919-23), served in the Minnesota State Senate, (1923-29) and was the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, (1929-31). In 1933, he was elected as a Farmer-Laborite to the Seventy-third Congress, serving until 1935. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed agricultural pursuits and retired from active business in 1944.
