U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Alabama, in 1933, from its law school in 1936, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Russellville, Alabama. He served as city attorney for Dora, Parrish, Cordova, Carbon Hill and Oakman and was judge of Recorders Court Jasper, Alabama, in 1942. During World War II, he served with the 79th Division, 313th Infantry, United States Army, (1942-44). After the war, he was again judge of Recorders Court Jasper, Alabama, in 1946 and elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first Congress, in 1949 and elected to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1965. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he served on President’s Library Commission, (1967-68), was chairman, Public Evaluation Committee, Office of State Technical Services, United States Department of Commerce, (1967-68) and a member of the Commerce Technical Advisory Board, United States Department of Commerce, (1968-70). Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law, plus owned an editing and publishing business until his death at age 85.
