U.S. Senator. He was a successful plantation owner in Fayette County Kentucky, which at the time was part of part of Virginia, in 1780. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, (1781-83, 85-86) and a delegate to the convention called to define the limits of the proposed State of Kentucky, (1785-88). Upon the admission of Kentucky as a State into the Union was elected as a Democrat-Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1792-95). After his term, he was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives in 1795 and a member of the Kentucky State Senate, (1796-1800). He lived in retirement on his plantation until his death at age 88.
