U.S. Senator. He attended the Virginia Military Institute, the Columbia Law School New York City, was admitted to the bar in 1888, but never practiced law. Moving to Versailles, Kentucky, he engaged in farming and horse breeding. In 1914, he was elected as a as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William O. Bradley, serving until 1915. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death at age 77.
