After I bought my first home on St. Thomas, I drove by my job to tell everyone it was mine. Tied to the front gate was a homeless stray dog my employees said was my housewarming present. I watched customers walk by him and into the store. He looked up at them but didn't move. I walked towards the door and he stood up and walked to me. I guess I was chosen to be his mom. I raced to the store, bought collar, leash, bowls, food, & toys and returned. Opened the car door and he jumped in like he'd been doing it all his life. The vet said he was about 6 months old.

When I moved to St. Croix, we hitched a ride on the newspaper plane. I flew the papers over too in my spare time, so all the other pilots knew me. Max had his own special seat belt and looked out the window in wonder at all the water below him.

My sweet "Coconut Retriever" boy. Born on St. Thomas; died in Mommy's arms on St. Croix. Never met a person he didn't like.

I miss you so much, Max:
